It’s no secret that we love clothes, but we know how overwhelming it can be when you have a wardrobe full of items that you never reach for but can’t quite bring yourself to throw away, just incase. We know it’s difficult having to let go of that jumper you’ve had since 1994, but it’s always good to start a new year with a clutter-free wardrobe. Carry on reading for our top tips on how to clear out your wardrobe this January.
1. Be realistic
Don’t go all Kim and Aggie on us and decide to tackle your whole wardrobe in one go. The site of your entire clothing collection piled on your bed is enough to have anybody breaking their promises of a dry January and reaching for the nearest alcoholic drink.
Instead, commit to focusing on one category at a time. Start with something you’ll be wearing currently, such as coats or jumpers, as you will already have a pretty good idea of what you haven’t been wearing over the last few months. You’re much more likely to persevere if you have an easy start.
2. Stick to the basics
The key to any versatile and long-lasting clothing collection is ensuring you’ve got the basics covered. Neutral colours can be paired with pretty much anything so you’ll only need a few items to create a variety of outfits. Not sure where to start? 3. Plan outfits as you organise
To avoid being left with random items that don’t match once you’re finished with your clear out, make sure you consider how your clothes can be paired together whilst you’re deciding what to keep. This doesn’t mean saying goodbye to your personality – if you have an outlandish outfit that you still get wear out of, then treasure it forever. But if it was a trend-based purchase that hasn’t ventured beyond your bedroom walls, it might be time for it to go. Have a read of our handy guide on building outfits for some inspiration!
4. Make sure your wardrobe is easy to navigate
Before you hastily pile everything back into your wardrobe in a frenzied mess, take a minute to organise your wardrobe, ready for its new lease of life.
- Use storage boxes for items you don’t need everyday. You’ll know where they are when you need them, but they’ll look tidy when you don’t.
- For the items you’re hanging up, divide them into categories; not only will this look neater, it will save you time when you’re getting ready.
- If you’re short on space, use removable hooks for the inside of your wardrobe doors. Hang your coats here and free up your rail for other pieces.
5. Fill in the gaps
Clearing out your wardrobe shouldn’t just be about throwing everything away and being left with one grey t-shirt and a pair of trainers. Use this a chance to reset and treat yourself to any staple pieces that you’re missing in your wardrobe. Stuck for inspiration?
